After seven successful years of making an
appearance at the Oregon Coast and visiting McIver State Park last year, all the fun and camaraderie of our Campout is
returning to the tree covered foothills near Estacada, Oregon.
On September 14-17, 2006, the Oregon Bears and friends will be pitching
tents and the usual fun at McIver State Park in two adjoining group campsites
with lots of trees, privacy and the key requirement of HOT SHOWERS! And, as a
bonus, there will be more parking for 30 cars right there and more parking
nearby.
McIver Park has some interesting local history of hosting groups full of fun and celebration like us and was the site of an early Rock Concert in the Woods (a la Woodstock) when then Governor Tom McCall put on an event called Vortex to draw attention away from an American Legion Convention in Portland where antiwar activists had planned to protest The Vietnam War. This plan worked and there were no clashes to really speak of between the American Legionaires and protesters. It has also been host to Civil War Reenactments and offers horse riding trails, Frisbee Golf, and access to the scenic and sometimes wet and wild Clackamas River.
Part of the excitement of moving toward Mt. Hood is the chance to look for new locales to explore and have fun day trips to places such as the historic WPA constructed Timberline Lodge at the top of Mt. Hood and Bagby Natural Hot Springs.
But have no fear. The Campout Committee is working on plenty of fun right there in the Campground. We’ll again be taking turns helping prepare hot and delicious community meals and having the fun of the 9th Annual Fuzzy Face and Bear Buns contests where our Emcee will be Rick Vandercar-Mr. Oregon Bear 2001 and former President for the Oregon Bears. And Friday evening we will be holding a Dessert Social. Campers are urged to bring their favourite dessert to share and to contribute to Camp Starlight; an organization that sets up campouts for HIV infected children to attend.
This years Campout Committee has been listening to members ideas on how to increase the fun of the campout as well as make it accessible to all. This year we are once again offering FIVE Value Packages to make it easy to enjoy some fun in the woods. This year for the Saturday evening meal, participants will have a choice of Steak or Chicken..
They start at just $35 for Meals Only (provide your own campsite) or for a Saturday Nite Sleepover Special and go up to no more that $70 for Early Bird Registration for the Full Package Deal.
Once again, we will have our “Buddy Bundle” package being offered for couples and/or buddies who want to bunk together sharing a tent site and one parking spot and this is starting at $110 and includes Campout Merchandise and Meals for two. Our Full Package for individuals includes meals, campsite, parking spot, and merchandise starting at $70. It is also available as Campout Lite (no merchandise) for a $10 discount.
All these prices are for the early bird registrations. Prices will jump up by $10 July 1, then $10 more on August 1. As always, Non-Members will be charged $15 more. The secret is, if you get a membership first, you get the Member Price and get all the discounts and benefits of carrying the card that matters.
